Twitter is Now
So, what is twitter? Is it really the future?
It is, indeed. But, my friends, the future is now.
At the most basic level, twitter is a way for a person to communicate with friends, family, colleagues, neighbors and the entire world - in 140 characters or less. By visiting the Twitter web site, you can tell everyone what you’re doing, and read what everyone else is doing.
Twitter also utilizes the SMS network - the cell phone text messaging network - to transmit messages, so that you can “tweet” (that’s the term for a single Twitter message) while you aren’t with your computer.
Why use Twitter?
There are several practical, real-world applications, such as:
- Promote your blog, website or business to your “followers.”
- Communicate with multiple people all at one time without having to utilize chat software. This can be done personally or professionally.
- Meet experts in your field. In my time on Twitter, I’ve tweeted with Maki of Dosh Dosh, Darren of ProBlogger, Brian of CopyBlogger and Hugh of Gaping Void.
- Make friends. In addition to those experts, I’ve made friends with less-known bloggers through Twitter, as well, such as writers James and Harry, motivational coach Dave, Internet marketing whiz Ritu, sushi cook Allison, viking Brett and a whole host of others.
So, what about you? Why do YOU use Twitter?

Neat coincidence — I started a twitter for my today.com blog just before I saw the twitter blog listed.
(I’m “preparedness” on twitter, btw.
