Twitter - What Are You Doing
Twitter’s interface asks you one simple question: “What are you doing?”
At first look, this may be the reason that there are so many Twitter skeptics. If Twitter exists only to ask “What are you doing?” and for you to say what you are doing, then Twitter is a mere novelty, at best.
Most of us, however, don’t use Twitter for it’s intended purpose. We use twitter to discuss ideas, to promote our blogs, and even to make business agreements.
As sort of an experiment, I went through the Twitter Tweets of 4 random people that I follow for the last two days. While I realize this isn’t a scientific sample, the results are telling: only 1 out of every 13 posts would be a fitting answer to the question, “What are you doing?”
I propose that Twitter ought to change their question. I think the Twitter interface should ask, “What would you like to add to the conversation?”
